I liked the sound of the SACD 1000 stock, mostly for the full midrange, good soundstaging, and great bass. I'll have to admit the treble response was lacking in air & extension. It also sounded slow, due to the strong bass I think. Alex's work fixed both of those problems and improved it in several other areas as well.I also remember the stock unit had a pretty laid back presentation, which I liked but others did not. I tried a Sony 999ES for a month, which everybody was raving about at the time, and it was definitely faster and more detailed than the SACD 1000. I thought it was a very good player for $1000, but compared to the SACD 1000 it was a bit too forward for me in my system and had a smaller soundstage.
So mostly, I think it's a matter of preference. For a while, it seemed there were two camps on this forum, those who preferred the Sony/Denon sound and those who preferred the Marantz/Philips sound. I imagine tcell, who prefers the CE775 to the SACD 1000, is amazed that there are people who like the SACD 1000. On the other hand, I am constantly amazed by the number of people who seem to like the Denon 2900.
