I'd go for a modified Denon. The factory caps are not bad, but Black Gates smoke them. The DIP opamps also need to be upgraded. The JR SMT opamps can be replaced with better, but the DIP opamps must be changed. If memory serves, it has 2 per channel. The output device should be changed with a BB OP2604 biased into class "A" operation, and the other with an LT1363, as 2 BB's would be too warm and would end up actually dampening the sound. Why one BB is great and 2 are bad I cannot say completely, but the LT's are a little shrill and need the BB's to tame them. It's just a perfect marriage.Stealth diodes and RT caps bypassing BG's on the DC gives you low level resolution you never had on your Phillips too. Sony's are nice, and can be modified to sound as good as the Denon, but out of the box they too need work. Considering the difference in the cost of purchase, and upgrades, the Denon is a better bargain, IMO. I once heard a modified Sony SACD Player, I cannot remember which of the 3K machines it was, but even with mucho dollars worth of mods, the guy's Electrocompaniet DAC sounded better than the Sony itself. I think he did some less important mods, and did not do the important ones, but he still had a LOT of money tied up in a less than great sounding CDP...
