I would second the Maverick recommendation. As far as pure sound, I think Mavericks are very good. A natural, realistic and lively presentation in both cd and sacd. Personally, I like the upsampling feature, but tastes vary. My particular Maverick has never had a single error in reading a disc, although others have reported such problems. On the down side, the Maverick (or at least mine)is a somewhat noisy machine. There is some type of mechanical noise during the playing of a few disks--I don't know what it is but it is not heard from my listening position at all while the music plays. I hear it between songs or when I have the speakers off (for headphone listening for example prior to putting on the headphones). The noise usually goes away after two or three songs and it only happens on a minority of discs.Of the sacd players I have compared it against, the Marantz 8260 a Sony ES, a Freja and a Ayre cx-5e, I personally liked the Maverick the most as to all but the Ayre. The Ayre was something else but I could not justify or come up with the $5950 (at least not right now). I have sent the Maverick out to Chris Johnson to be modded this week in the hope that maybe it really will be able to compete with the $6,000 machines. That may be wishful thinking, but the Maverick in stock form plays great music for $1500.
