I am a huge fan of the MLP recordings. IMHO, these are possibly the best classical recordings ever made. However, some of the MLP recordings are closely miked and will sound too forward and bright in some systems.I believe 15 out of the 20 MLP SACDs are direct to DSD transfers from 2 and 3 channel magnetic tape. They haven't released too many of the 35mm film recordings, so it's hard to generalize about how they compare to the tape recordings. But I don't think they are necessarily spoiled by the PCM conversion.
Then again, a number of my favorite SACDs are from Chesky, so I'm hardly a DSD purist.
