They probably will not own a turntable , a CD player or even some futuristic Blu-ray super DVD thing-a-ma-jig. Their source will be a high-end hard disc, which will play uncompressed, very high resolution music. They will legally download and pay for "better than SACD" recordings on super fast internet connections. When you mention music on a computer , everyone thinks MP3, but the truth is that a hard drive can be a very efficient high quality source and there is no reason why high resolution music cannot be posted and downloaded.Hard disc crashes are no big deal. all you have to do is back up. Just ask any business. In fact, in some ways, a back-up is safer than having a myriad of plastic platters. Last month, my family and I evacuated Houston due to the approach of Hurricane Rita. Thankfully, Rita turned out to be a non-event for us, but we had to make some hard choices about what to take with us. I grabbed about 100 SACDs out of a collection of close to 1000 albums. If Rita had hit, much of my software would have been junk. It would have been much easier to grab a mega-gigabyte portable hard disc that held my complete collection.
I'm amused by all these passionate arguments about the future format. The public has spoken. The future format is the hard disc. I expect to have one in my system within five years. Christine already does. As soon as high resolution downloads are available, I intend to buy mine.
