I own an early CDSD Mk. I. Very occasionally, it doesn't read the SACD layer of a hi-rez disc. (Unlike you, I haven't experienced it reading the SACD layer as redbook; that's really strange.) I just called EMM, and they explained to me that this happens to a lot of SACD players (which mirrors my experience). They also mentioned that they stopped using the original transport in the CDSD because it was discontinued. Their new transport isn't any more reliable than the original, but they had to totally redesign the player to make it fit, so original units can't be upgraded to the new mechanism. According to one of the lead engineers, there is some sonic DIFFERENCE between the two transports, but it's not a matter of improvement. He says it's mostly a matter of taste--i.e., what kind of presentation you prefer. The two have mildly different characters. He also said that the differences are pretty slight, so unless you have super-revealing equipment, you probably won't even notice it. FWIW.
