The former focuses on an upgrade to a person's whole music collection versus trying to gain improvement on an individual recording.The former would be cheaper in my mindset though I'm sure some feel the recording upgrade is perhaps the better way to go to recognize the greater sonic improvement.
I'm unsure how many "audiophiles" may have opted to buy into the format if they already own high caliber CD players and have a vast music collection.
I need to try some of the Mercurys. I haven't done so as of yet. I already have some feedback here and on sa-cd.net as to the ones folks feel are best.
