At the website of The Journal of the Audio Engineering Society I have seen articles that say unequivocally that there is no engineering reason why there should be an audible difference between correctly implemented RCA and balanced connections.Of course, for long runs, or if you have inherent hum issues, then balanced connections would be preferred and could make an audible difference. Likewise, for professional use balanced is the way to go because the connection is so much more secure than a single ended connection. I use balanced connections exclusively in my video suite for precisely both of these reasons. (And also that is the only way you can get professional audio and video gear).
If one of the other connections is audibly different (but otherwise fine) and you don’t have hum issues then the manufacturer of one or more components (including cables) may not have properly implemented or the manufacturer has given short shrift to one connection or has purposely made one sound different than the other.
I have had at least two manufacturers tell me that they offer balanced connections only because some customers ask for them. They find that they add unnecessary expense and complexity while adding nothing to sound quality.
Otherwise, there is absolutely nothing wrong with balanced connections. I use them because they are hedge against some audio problems that could arise.
