New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

Great thread, Christine, but better doesn't always mean more expensive,

as has already been suggested. I've recently replaced my preamp with one costing a third as much that is more dynamic and, overall, more natural sounding than its predecessor. I know of one system locally that is worth $500K USD that does not sound as good as others among a group of friends that cost as little as $5K.

Beyond that, long ago I personally came to terms with the fact that although the SACD might be better than your garden variety CD in theory, the execution has been spotty at best. There are numerous examples of this, with the more cognizant of the audio jounalists often pointing to the procedural gaffs that have been made with some very important SACD reissues. In this month's issue of The Absolute Sound, for one example, Harry Pearson notes how uneven the Mercury Living Presence releases have been. Richard Foster echoes these sentiments in Hi Fi +.

There are some excellent sounding SACDs, but I would submit to you that there are thousands of excellent sounding CDs too; it just takes the right system synergy to find them.

Congrats on your new equipment which has led you to accept that the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts.
