Re: Sony over the Cary ?

The big problem with the Cary 303/300 is that it is significantly less resolving than the XA777ES. I struggled with integrating the Cary for two months and recently gave up and removed it from my system.

When I demoed the Cary I was impressed by its dynamics and bought it on the assumption that it would provide a more organic presentation. But I found that being used to the Sony's detail it was impossible to enjoy the Cary...I was always straining to hear clearly details and passages I knew should be there in the music.

It's easy to assume the Cary should be the better machine due to its pedigree and its features (upsampling). But you have to remember that the Sony has inherent upconversion where the CD data is first transformed to 24-bit words by an 8x-oversampling filter, then upsampled to 2.8824MHz/1-bit data (quoting Sterophile there). The Sony is arguably the more advanced machine of the two.

To sum up the strong points of each player the Cary can sometimes produce an organic dynamic, but the Sony is far superior in resolution.
