It is not really true that high-impedance headphones are "harder to drive" than low-impedance ones. In some ways, high-impedance headphones are "easier to drive". High-impedance headphones like more voltage while low-impedance headphones need current.Generally speaking, tiny battery-powered amplifiers (such as those found in portable devices) are not designed to provide enough voltage for high-impedance headphones but they can provide enough current for low-impedance headphones.
