This is not mentioned on the Grado website, but one of the changes Grado made for the RS1is are longer earcups. Grado mentions that RS1i earcups are made from a different species of wood, but for some reason they do not mention that they are also about 1/4" longer. I've owned both models and (to my ears) the RS1is not only sound more dynamic, but they also "soundstage" better than RS1s do. The sonic differences between the two models are not huge but they are significant. Also, I'm one of the guys who do not find the standard L cushions to be uncomfortable - so long as headband tension is adjusted correctly.
