.., (at least the better ones) can provide dynamic and tactile sensations that circumaural headphones have trouble matching. It has something to do with the way the sound directly massages the external portions of the ears, but also, when the drivers are situated directly across from the openings of the ears a la Grado (and when the drivers are backed up by long, tunnel-like earcups) the result is this intensified feeling of directness and intimate communication. These wooden cans are certainly unique in the headphone world and I'm sure you know that some consider the RS1s to be Grados best headphones - at least for certain types of music.
