It's been a long time since I posted here, and a long time since anything striking has come out on high-def audio, but the new Beatles Love album finally reached my ears after spotting it hidden away in a locked cabinet at Borders the other night shopping ...Gadzooks.
This is more than just a compilation. Some have called it a "mash up," I want to call it a "love in."
The care and detail which has gone into this is incredibly respectful to the music, the "feel" of the band, and the sheer fun of the music. I mean, you'll never find music more life affirming than The Beatles, and this album pays the highest homage to that.
As a purist, as someone who hates new mixes of old songs (for example, I despise the re-imaging of War Of The Worlds on SACD), I went into this expecting to hate it. I really did. The opposite happened, and I've listened to it 5 times in as many days. I simply can't get over how well it works, and how my favourite Beatles songs are given such careful treatment. When "Something" starts, I almost teared up - the warmth, clarity and sheer musicality of the mix is overwhelming. The sound quality and discrete placement of instruments took me by complete surprise. To be able to re-sync all these separate streams of any given recording tells me that the master tapes have been kept in pristine condition and handled with absolute professionalism. The masters are in great hands, we need to worry about that! Not once did I worry about the sound quality, the lack of an instrument, the placement of sounds or any of a dozen other "concerns" one has when they are greeted with a multi-channel presentation of closely held music.
The music truly speaks to your soul, and even during segues when partial songs are combined (effortlessly by the way) there is a sense of excitement, a sense of wonder. This album is like being able to listen to all the Beatles songs at the same time.
I'm quite moved by this album, and I want to thank those responsible from the bottom of my heart.
Cheers,
Paul.
