Ok, here are some facts for you, since I can't stand the rampant misinformation spread on these forums.Dual Discs do NOT exceed the thickness spec for CDs and DVDs. Period. End of story. They are manufactured to be within the thickness spec by making the the CD layer slightly thinner than Red Book spec. If you have a properly manufactured player, you should have no trouble getting the disc in or out of the player.
(This does not apply to the disc product called DVDp1us, which seems to be two full thickness discs glued together, exceeding the thickness spec, at least in the samples I have tested)
SOME hardware manufacturers have, over the years, cut corners on some of their players, (particularly megachangers) so these players have problems handling discs that are within thickness spec. (Notice you don't see any warnings from hardware manufacturers when *they* violate the Redbook Player Manufacturing spec.)
Dual Discs can handle ~ 65 to 66 minutes of audio on the CD-compatible side.
Over and over again I hear on this forum that record companies are "stupid" and are screwing their customers by not giving them the highest resolution audio.
You guys have got to realize that 99.999 percent of our customers don't care about high-res audio. It is not even on their radar. A significant portion of the market cares about videos, and a smaller segment cares about surround sound. Hi-res audio is a not even a blip, except in certain genres such as Classical.
That being said, we try to put the highest resolution audio on Dual Disc that we can fit within the limitation of the format.
Also, there is another factor that drives this that you guys are not aware...retailers generally don't want to stock more than one SKU of a title. So separate hi-res SKUs of titles are getting harder to place in retail - for both SACD and DVDA formats.
Why don't retailer want to stock separate hi-res SKUs? Why do you think? Sales.
The simple fact is that if hi-res titles had great sales, we'd be manufacturing a lot more hi-res titles.
