They are OEM versions, highly customized to DeVore's specs, so he has to buy them in lots of a thousand. Modern SEAS midbass drivers are indeed capable of excellent bass extension for their size, especially in a ported alignment (see Joseph Audio for another example), but the points you raise are valid: How much does the distortion at 30Hz rise as you increase the volume, and how badly do these long excursions intermodulate the higher frequencies? At reasonable SPLs, though, I'm sure they sound wonderful.
