I'm a big fan of poetry, and TS Eliot in particular. I just spun Disc 1 of a two-disc set of Sir Alec Guinness reading the poetry of Eliot. Very quiet vinyl from 1975. Sounds really good. Quite enjoyable.Speaking of spoken word albums, I almost pulled the trigger recently on both volumes of "Let's Talk About the Atom", a total of six LPs from 1970 consisting of radio interviews with experts on nuclear energy. I took a pass on them. It would have been a novelty that I would never have played again. Could have been entertaining, though.

but on cassette.
Interesting! I have a "spoken word" section of LPs and I just checked with my son about sending my granddaughter a copy of Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats as they have a new family cat.
Don't crush that dwarf, hand me the pliars
Last night I spun "A Child's Garden of Grass." Pre-legalization comedy. Let's just say I was in the proper frame of mind to enjoy it. I've got lots of old comedy records, Firesign Theater, Cosby, Flip Wilson's "The Devil Made Me Buy This Dress." Nobody listens to this crap anymore but I enjoy it on rare occasions.
I've got all (I think) the Firesign Theater LP's and a Lehrer LP or two. I still think they are marvelously inventive and funny. And yes, some mood alteration while playing is recommended. I believe Firesign is available on Tidal.
What is truly extraordinary is that I happened upon Audio Asylum just minutes ago. Good to know there are others with not so ordinary tastes like this on the planet!
If you decide to hang around just try to remember it IS an asylum.
There's a number of twisted, " not so ordinary", inmates here.
During my freshman year, Spring 1990, Tom Lehrer taught a math elective, called the Nature Of Math. It wasn't until the end of that quarter, when one of the students asked if he was the same Tom Lehrer, who wrote jingles for Electric Company, and was a satirist. Without making eye contact, Mr. Lehrer just smiled, and told us to wait until the next lecture. During that next lecture, Mr. Lehrer brought an acoustic guitar, and spoke/sang a few short songs.
We also did not know that Mr. Lehrer was an influence or inspiration, for some of Steely Dan's biting cynicism.

really have to slow down and be in the mood to focus on every word. It also helps to chemically assist the mood and focusing. Those days are long gone for me.
Firesign theatre used to do radio plays on one of the Los Angeles radio stations (KPFK), which led me to buy a couple of their albums after they started recording , when I could find them in the used bins.but I really clicked in to resurrect the name of Lord Buckley, a comedian from the beatnik era , who has recorded some hilarious spoken word fantasies , often living one with insight at the end.
"God's own drunk" story first comes to mind , along with "who is driving the car . " perhaps the beatnik lingo makes then less accessible today, but I am glad to own the recordings of what I consider , timeless bits.
and , to me, spoken word is just a step away from A cappella singing the the Persuasions vocal group
