Her cover of "Trouble in Mind" from the 1985 Alan Rudolph film of the same name is so good and sets the tone for the entire movie.
Godspeed Marianne.
A sad day indeed!
I saw her in Dark Ride here in SF 10 + years ago-
and have most of her recordings -
an incredible woman!
Happy Listening
sure took its toll on her voice.

"Trying is the first step towards failure."
Homer Simpson
Marianne. Anita Pallenberg.
First time I watched the Rock'n'Roll Circus, as the cameras did a closeup of Marianne while she was singing Something Better, her eyes were so glassy and unfocused it looked like she was about to nod off.
To her credit she made the comeback of a lifetime after suicide attempts and junkiedom with the critically acclaimed Broken English in'79.

. . . you don't understand. It's less to do with lifestyle than biology.I never smoked or did heroin. I can no longer hit the highs that I could in my 20s, but forty years later I understand a lot more about tone and phrasing than I did then.
I think her voice got better over time. Her 2018 album, Negative Capability , with Warren Ellis and Nick Cave was brilliant and underappreciated.
. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .

I noticed that with people with a good singing voice and smoke.
Their voices seem to get deeper over the years much more than non smokers.
Joni Mitchell etc.
Those who have smoked since their early teens show it more.
the higher frequencies. Smoke voices also get raspy and sometimes distorted. Her singing on a Chieftains CD was not just low. She sounded to me like she was on her death bed. It was a real turnoff to me. Some singers with low raspy voices sound great and soulful. Hers was distracting. My opinion only, of course.
I believe it was more her years of Heroin abuse.
unless she was regularly smoking heroin, I doubt the damage is comparable to a tobacco addiction. one is in the blood, the other goes down the windpipe.
