I have a Soundsmith Sussurro phono cartridge on a VPI unipivot arm, just curious if you folks have a lp of choice that you use to fine tune a cartridge by ear
Follow Ups:
Music or alignment LP? Regardless, may I humbly suggest setting crosstalk for the lowest value/best balance. It requires both azimuth and zenith be optimal and is electrically measurable - a DMM at the speakers or an o-scope at the phono or phono pre. Then tune by ear (VTF/VTA) with a music LP.
VTF and VTA - So set it and forget it or tune it by ear. Not going to touch that old argument.
be careful with tuning by ear. the harder one tries to hear something , the harder it becomes, because of the extreme subjectivity of human hearing. every medical hearing test has a built in correction for sounds reported that were not generated in the test.
I do not depute the suggestion offered above. I never tried it. I would suggest taking a break between listening sessions , as reality is not a strong suit of the hearing mechanism. Not to say there is no reality, but the question is do the reports generated in the brain match reality, and how would one know?
I would recommend getting the Cardas test LP to assist in your cartridge adjustment mission. It has some pretty good testing to evaluate your cartridge alignment.

Additionally, the MOFI Geo Disc is a simple straightforward cartridge alignment tool that is very easy to use if you want to get close to ballpark, or sometimes, spot on accuracy (overhang ) in getting your cartridge setup.
you need a few devices to get your cart correctly set up. Then - when this is done - you can do fine tuning by listening .
!. digital VTF meter.
2. a perspex cross-hatch - which helps you to:
a. get azimuth right, and
b. get your arm horizontal (ie. VTA).
3. a cart protractor. Preferably an arc protractor made for your arm ... but, otherwise, a standard 2-point protractor.
4. a Test Record with bias tracks - to get you to an initial position, re. anti-skate.
