perhaps if you diversify , a hit in one area would be a little easier to take. there is a lot of interest in turntables lately, perhaps more media would help because I don't even know what you are selling.anyway, good luck. may the holidays be very productive for you

has been a valuable source for those of us with AR and Thorens turntables. Please search the archives for all his great contributions for 22 AA years!
turns out I had visited that site a few times.
I used to enjoy one of the last incarnations of the fabulous AR turntable, an EB101, a product of the 1980's. Wanted to get an Empire, but it seems they sold them all before they reached the west coast. And AR's were kind of suffering because interest in record players was slight.
the AR's improved arm, made by jelco, made for a wide soundstage and the imaging had me joking that my old direct drive Kenwood , with a very decorative style and foamed concrete base, was made by a company that excelled in can openers.
In truth the Kenwood was as durable as all the other direct drive Japanese tables of the day and spun records dependably well.
it's just that when I got the AR, it was so much better, it convinced me that belt drive suspended is the winning design for a budget conscious system.
I had so much success with that design philosophy that my last and final turntable upgrade was also a suspended belt drive, the classic Michell gyro. If that ever becomes my systems weak link, I will have one heck of a system, and be very satisfied.
She asked how much it would cost. I said I could get one "for a thousand dollars." She seemed very reluctant, but said "okay." Later adding "$4000 seems like a lot of money." When I cleared it up that I said, "for a thousand," she was relieved. Even more so when Kef put their discontinued Kube 12b on sale for $600.
If you want to give your wife some perspective, take her into a stereo shop with you. I went to listen to a $1700 NuPrime amp. The dealer swapped it out for a $55,000 Soulution driving some similarly priced Magicos. She couldn't tell the difference, and I barely could. Then I told her the Nordost cables connecting that system costs more than my entire setup, she realized a lot of guys are even crazier than I am.
Maybe that's why $4000 for a subwoofer didn't freak her out.
My guess is that most men who use WAF as an excuse to cancel a sale are not being truthful, especially when it comes to something that is not going to alter the appearance of the listening room and/or that is priced modestly.

super expensive stuff tends to make me think the extreme subjectiveness of human hearing is in play, since most things that cost more , only cost more because they give a demonstrable return for a higher investment.
however, human hearing did not evolve to be logical, it merely thinks it reflects reality. one might logically think a five thousand dollar speaker wire has benefits over a five hundred dollar speaker wire, because of past market place experiences, but we are dealing here with how the mind interprets the illusion created by a reproduction of past audio events. there can be no finite answer without some kind of scientific test. And even the best testing might not agree with the reality brewed up inside one's head.
I am reminded of when my brother was leaving the Air Force and selling a little bug eyed sprite he used to chase around Tucson in his off duty hours. He bought it for a couple of hundred dollars, so offered to sell it for the same price he paid a few years earlier. he had not even an inquiry.
he raised the .asking price a thousand dollars , sold it to the first guy that came over, and continued to get offers to buy for days after the sale. simple perception of value because of the higher price.
