Can I just add a little resistance between it and my digital multimeter?

My Fluke outputs 1mA on the 600ohm range setting, stepping down by an order of magnitude to 1uA for the 6Mohm setting and 0.5uA for the 50M setting.
When I've done this I've only been interested in find shorts/opens so I use the 50M setting to minimize current through the coils. The lowest resistance setting will give the best accuracy if that is what you're after and I can't imagine even 1mA causing any damage. If the coil resistance is 10ohms then that is only 10uW power dissipation.
