I figured the difference between the two was a better diamond for the 540.
You think there may be other differences in the bodies?

Same dimensions. The recommended VTF is 2.2 grams instead of 1.8.
The 540 doesn't sound as bright and it isn't as sensitive to capacitance as the 440.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Thanks for that. There's more to the diamond than just shape and size. Grain direction of the crystal for example. I just assumed it was better quality diamond in the 540.
A couple of years back I looked long and hard at possibility of going to user replaceable stylus MM. I couldn't figure out what the difference was exactly between them then since specs were identical.
All this is water under the bridge as it looks like the 440 has been discontinued.
I had a 440MLa and a 150MLx. Get the input capacitance down to about 100pf, they sounded really sweet. They'd get kind of bright if the capacitance got too high.
But I tried the 540ML with everything from 0 pf to 500pf, and there was barely any difference in the way it sounded.
BTW, AT, like Denon, always used a good quality diamond.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.

is to drop the load impedance to around 40 Kohms. It works for me, at least, in reducing the excess brightness heard sometimes.
