My first serious turntable (around 1974) was a Michell Transcriptor with a Shure SME arm and Shure Type "something" cartridge. During the years I had that TT, the cartridge was upgraded several times, always with the most expensive Shure. There was something about the sound quality that never seemed right though, and it wasn't resolved until I finally moved to Audio Technica. Along the way, because I was in the business, I also had the chance to audition a large number of brands - Empire, Ortofon, Grado, B&O, etc., etc. I'm still using AT today, even though my TT isn't the iconic equal of the Transcriptor. The cartridge is an old AT125LC, and if the newer models are similar at all, there's just no reason to go anywhere else.

I'm into moving coils, though. Nevertheless, I've owned both Shure and Audio Technica MM cartridges before switching to moving coils, and I believe Audio Technica is the better value today. Therefore, I'd recommend an Audio Technica within your friend's price range. I can't imagine that your friend wouldn't be happy with an Audio Technica MM cartridge.
Good luck,
John Elison
