No cheesy string section!
Follow Ups:
I guess you've never heard "Only the Lonely" or "Wee Small Hours". Full orchestra, yes, but strings are far from cheesy. Then there's "Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim". Any of these 3 is transcendent.
Of course I've heard them and sorry, but I find the strings over the top lush and yes, cheesy!
you apparently like the songs "More" and "Hello, Dolly", which are both featured on the Sinatra/Basie album. Talk about cheesy...
(All of this is in jest, only, though I do dislike those two potboilers.)
and I will be selling my Sinatra/Basie on eBay. I found these two while going through my 8000 records in storage, and I had never played them until now.
Good thing I own two copies of "FAS and ACJ", one of Sinatra's best. And the reason it is so is that Frank lays back on the bossa rhythms, allowing you to feel the tenderness and love in Jobim's music. And even when he quotes Cole Porter's "I concentrate on you" or Irving Berlin's "Change Partners", he honors the bossa rhythm and sings the song very quietly in contrast to his typical night club brash style (which I also enjoy but which would not be appropriate with this music.
