I just purchased one of these cartridges for $50 from a dealer. One of the channels is out, but VAS said they can fix (which I found out before I purchased it). I suppose that Grado could probably fix it as well.
Anyway, there are no sound samples of it online, and the samples of the Platinum version over the regular Reference version have me worried as the Statement version is much more revealing, ruining the ideal sound produced by the Reference.
Now I now that such things are very system dependant, especially if there are step-ups used with the Statement.
But the question to ask is what a Statement Sonata 1 sounds like compared to the "ideal" sound of a Reference Platinum 1?

I can vouch for Steve at VAS. He is very competent and also very reasonable. You can't go wrong with him.

Does this have the Elliptical Stylus on it? if so, you should look into upgrading that Stylus to a Micro Ridge while you are having it repaired. That would really make that nice sounding cartridges sound really really good!
The stylus is more advanced than a simple elliptical. I set it up and listened to it, and found it to be producing the same type of unrefined treble (along with its fatigue) as most cartridges in the $2000 price range.I also hear this with the Silver and Gold. But the Reference Platinum seems to be free of it whereas the Statement version isn't.
I need a warm, smooth and full low output cartridge with pristine fatigue free high frenquencies, but have yet to find one that is currently produced for under $1000.

" there are no sound samples of it online, "
Maybe because you can't capture the nuance of good audio in a compressed digital file.
When directly recorded from a phonostage/preamp/dac, I can hear their basic properties including the false detail and resulting distortion that has ruined the sound of modern hifi components.
