Hey, Folks:
I was out of the vinyl game for a long time, because I had to sell my equipment in 2018. However, I picked up a Fischer MT 720 at an estate sale today for $10. Yes, it a very plasticky unit. But it also sounded better than I thought it would.
I tend to favor wanting to get new carts for turntables because I don't know where the other ones have been. I know this won't take an Ortofon 2M Black for obvious reasons. But would someone be able to recommend a nice upgrade maybe in the $100-120 range that fits? Even less would suffice. Thanks.
Follow Ups:
The base model with a conical stylus is $40.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Thank you for the reply. Here's a follow up if ATs are a good match for this table. I noticed today that someone in my city has a AT 8008 used for $60 on Craigslist. Is that considered too nice for this table? Part of me feels like I'd be better going with something new, but if the man kept his stuff nice; it could be a steal. Thoughts?
The specs are good. The only thing that puts me off vintage carts is when it's time to replace the stylus. I don't think AT makes a stylus for the 8008 anymore, you'd have to rely on aftermarket suppliers. My own experience with aftermarket styli is that they aren't worth the money.
The V95 is current production and for $60, you could get one with an elliptical stylus that should track better and pull more detail out of the grooves than the conical.
And dude--rock the turntable you've got. Who cares how much you paid for it, if it were mine I'd put an AT VM540ML in it and enjoy.
In fact, I would have recommended that cartridge--I use one myself--but it's beyond your budget.

That's good news in a way. The seller already parted with it, so it's not available. I'll look at that as another option. Thank you once again for your insights.
I had always heard that certain plastic tables from that era were garbage, but I'm pleased with the sound so far. I'm starting to dream like Icarus though and wonder what might improve it.Hence the post. ;-)
he would know best about the Audio Technica cartridges
