Howdy Basher and thanks. I put the stylus under my micro scope and was happy with what I saw. I then took a strand of fine wire and poked at the cantilever a bit and got what I thought should be normal movement via the rubber bushing in there. Combine this with good results from torture tracks of the Shure Test LP and I'm going to hold off doing anything for the immediate. But, when I comes to it, I'll go with Jico. Thanks again!
Follow Ups:
You have a microscope - excellent. (I wish I had one.) You may already be familiar with what to look for, but if you aren't, see link below. One thing I didn't see in your picture was lighting from both sides of the stylus - two lamps are needed so you can see (and compare) the shape of the wear on each side of the stylus tip. Look closely at the photos in that link and you can see what to look for.
Excellent info & image for reference! Yeah, have had this scope since I was a boy in the sixties. Still got my dad's childhood chemistry set too from the thirties. All the glass beakers, tubes etc. Pretty kewl.
...had some nasty stuff in them, also. Back then I was very interested in chemistry and went through almost ALL of the experiments in the first set the very first day that I got it!
The second set took somewhat longer as I learned to space out the experiments so as to enjoy the set for a much longer time.
Also, as I lived in Baltimore, MD, the location of a chemical supply house (The Will Corporation) that would sell to walk-ins, I was able to acquire some real chemical glassware over time; and the full hard-bound with glossy-paper pages catalog book of around 1000 pages. I wish that I still had that, it was a very nice sample of the technical printers' art. :> (
*Think A. C. Gilbert (American Flyer trains) here.
Later Gator,
Dave
