Back in the '70s and '80s the back pages of audio magazines listed multiple ads for discounted products.
I had an employment change in the late '70s that caused me to downsize my system. But I was still interested in decent sound. I'd read reviews in a couple of British mags, praising the Sansui AU 707. We had a local electronics dealer/discount house that carried Sansui and they advertised they would "meet or beat any price".
So, armed with the latest copy of Stereo Review and a buddy to witness the transaction, I went to their store to buy a 707. When I showed the sales staff the discounted price in an ad he hesitated and said he would need to discuss with his manager. A couple of minutes later the manager appeared and told me why they couldn't sell the unit at that price. I also had a copy of their full page ad from the local paper, with their price policy in bold print. When I suggested his refusal could have legal implications he relented and sold me a new unit for the discount price.
But the funny part came a few days later when their newspaper ads then proclaimed, "We will meet or beat any locally advertised price"!
And BTW, that Sansui was an outstanding match for the pair of used Maggie MG II I found.

That's very cool! I suppose you would never see one (even back in the day) unless you lived near a Lafayette. Must be a very rare item now.
