According to the linky below, there was a long history of Lafayette
It did indeed manufacture equipment - some of it well respected
The early history of radio, and Television including the rest of HiFi equipment is quite interesting-
I am ~30% into a book titled Master Switch, by Tim Wu which goes into the history at a deep level, though mostly about the majors and control of the industry, not specific manufacturers. There was a time before the Great depression /WWII when Radio was a Wild West, and there were many companies that made components and equipment- I am sure that Allied was similar and actually manufactured equipment. There was also a HUGE DIY movement after WWII with all the GIs who came home with technical skills and experience.

The Fisher 600 seemed pricey compared to the McIntosh amps, but those are mono amps.

Good FM broadcasts can still sound good today.
I am a fan of the remarkably clever and beautifully executed analog technology that brought us mono-compatible multiplexed FM stereo. Engineers in those days had it goin' on . :)To this day, I have far too many of 'em. :-p
EDIT: Tuners, that is -- not engineers.
all the best,

I scanned through a 1966 catalog. I remembered they were thick, but didn't remember the huge variety of products, their own and others.
Just before I got out of the Navy in '66 I ordered Dynakits, AR speakers, and Dual turntable with Empire cartridge to assemble before returning to school that fall. But that was from an east coast discount house other than Lafayette.
Also, Lafayette was much older than I imagined.
