Classic symptom that the power supply capacitors are failing Probably those 2 big ones in the middle of your tiny picture. Can you post a bigger picture?
There were plenty of internal pictures on line, so I'm not sure why ParloFax couldn't find one.
You appear to be correct about the two largest caps, which are marked 3,300 uF @ 35V. There's also a lot of other electrolytics though, and given the age of the Sony I'd replace them all, unless he has an ESR meter to check them.
Sorry, the picture is not mine. This is the best I can do with, but I see what you mean by those 2 big ones. Thanks for this info!
Those caps will be a couple of dollars each, get a soldering iron and solder sucker, another $20 and do it yourself. People here will help you and you can watch clips on unsoldering and soldering.
