hi Folks.. have a restored Magnavox SE EL84 amp which, yes, true to its legend, is pretty stunning sounding. Wondering what the group suggests for good, but smaller speakers for it. Small condo now, 13x12 living room. Thank you for your suggestions. I am thinking Realistic Solo 103, Noresco w 8" Isophon, and I currently have 10" R&A wideband, 1960's, UK. All suggestions appreciated. Prefer those with Alnico motors.
Follow Ups:
Cerwin Vega D-1. Only takes a few watts to get them to fill a small room.
In a small condo 6 high quality watts is enough using any reasonably efficient speakers. Not really a limiting factor unless you like it LOUD
I see a lot of different Magnavox el84 amps. Is there particular models or transformers that are more desirable?
if you can find them - Celestion 3
a small bookshelf ported 2 way.
Part of a series that Celestion put out just before they withdrew from the consumer market
IIRC there was a 1, 3, 5 & 7
the 3 was the darling of the time - Late '80s/early '90s...
Happy Listening
Oh yes I remember those Celestions. Had the 3 and 5 and listened to the 7. The 5 always sounded best to my ears, The 3 was a bit bass shy and the 7 had some bass boom. Still listen to the 5 in my shop connected to a 4 watt amp.
Due to amp low power look at 93dB or higher sensitive speakers for starters.
Really really nice sound, you can add a super-tweeter if you crave going past ~12k. The Tru-Sonic KT5 is amazing but would prob cost 2-3x what the FR80s by themselves would cost, altho the KT5 usually comes with an attenuator (5KX) that also works a s crossover (around 5k, IIRC - I've just gotten a pair and haven't dissected them yet, altho that name would make sense if so). Run the FR80s full-range and wire the KT5s thru their attenuator.
Old Altec 409, 8" concentric ceiling speakers sound wonderful in a 2'cuft cabinet.Replace the two cheapo caps with something better.
Lots of variants of these over the years and not sure the difference between the vintages.
SQ is punchy, out of the box and fun. Awesome mid-range.
Love em with my Heathkit AA32.
