Triode,
interesting thought, could be "speaker synergy" with the amp. As in my later thought, if the Citation I pre-amp is the pre-amp Stu designed with the Citation II amp and it's an anode follower, why would he have designed something that would end up being so full of hiss and noise when mated. You have to think that the pairing is great and I am aware it's very well sought after. Maybe the culprit is the speaker..
Follow Ups:
Jim McShane has posted good advice above for lowering the noise floor of the Citation I. Still, an amplifier capable of 60W output with 1.5V input has grater gain than a 10W amplifier with the same sensitivity. In this example, the difference is about 7.8dB. If you like the sound of both units, there's nothing wrong with the use of inline attenuators after the preamp to reduce residual noise.
Triode,
funny, before you sent this message, I ordered some from Harrison labs just to see if this would lower it a bit. I figured for the cost it was worth the experiment. They claim a 12db reduction in gain.
I'll see if it helps any. Yes, I liked the combination, I probably should have consulted with you guys further before giving up the first time.
