If vented, what kind of tuning?I think there's a pair of those in the basement. :)
I have been told occasional good things about them, but I've never actually hooked them up, much less put 'em in any enclosures.
all the best,
mrh

Sorry, I slapped these together as an experiment and liked them so much I never bothered to measure them. I did modify the XO but need to revisit those and make another mod with "real" XO caps.I built with a slot in the back probably one inch wide and across the back.
See discussion link below of cabinet builds that are designed uber expensive 755 Altec. I've been thinking about doing a pair of these... maybe start another thread as a project thread?

I.e., the Silbatone enclosure. :)
But, interestingly, I was uncharacteristically motivated by this very thread to take action -- using an unwitting pair of enclosures that were already here : EV Coronets, which had been loaded with EV "Wolverine" LS8 twincones (and also, in full disclosure, T35s that are not hooked up but do fill the cutouts provided for them). Out with the Wolverines, in with the 409-STs ( sans matching transformers).Listening to them now -- they aren't bad.
The Silbatone route is (now) calling me, though. :)
all the best,
mrh

Atta boy! Looks like your having fun there.
I had some time (and an out of town wife for a week) over the Holidays... I did what any self respectable diy'er would do and had speaker fest in my living room.
So, this little 7" Altec was up against some big boys, including a 18" JBL open baffle. The 409 did some things in the midbass that I would love to get out of the bigger formats.
I think any cabinet designed for an Altec 755 variant will work fine... which from what I have seen is 2cuft and an optimum baffle width people go for.
I did a simple two cap XO mod that I'll have to open the cabinets and inspect to give you the "recipe". I want to upgrade that anyway, so... thanks for getting me motivated. I might even move this new cabinet project ahead of another speaker build I've been contemplating.

I haven't built these yet but it's on my list. I did a quickie 2cuft "experiment" with a 16.5" wide baffle. Port is a 2" wide open slot going across the back. It sounded so good I haven't measured or anything else since... besides a XO mod.
Building the above cabinets has been on my list. Your inquirery might just be the motivation for me to build. Maybe start a separate thread build???
You can buy these drivers for around $100. The Heathkit amp cost $200. With my phone as the source, Big smiles at just how wonderful this sounds for the price of a low end power cord.
Here's one with "Japanese" pricing.
