Whatever enhances the hobby for you and you have the means to acquire it. Over the years I made 2 huge buys. One consisting of 28,000 albums that had belonged to an LA DJ and another storage unit of 34 pieces of vintage tube amps and preamps, along with 1,000's of audio tubes, multiple turntables, and he liked Altec speakers. Both were the contents of storage units.
At this point in my life I celebrate not having all of the clutter. I guess you could say I had my fun.
Follow Ups:
...with regard to audio. A better way to phrase it is that, like many of us, I walk the line between audiophile and music lover. The longer I go with a system I'm happy with, the more the music lover prevails.
But when I find a better piece of equipment, which in this case it's the PS Audio Stellar phono stage, then the audiophile part of me allows distracting "what if?" thoughts to creep in.
So, long-term, I don't really suffer from upgradeitis. I was joking with Inmate Airtime last month that someone like Inmate Abe Collins has likely gone through more equipment within a few years than I have in a lifetime. I'm not implying that there's anything wrong with that, and it's not that I wouldn't have liked to have tried some different things. But the idea of buying, trying, selling and shipping a variety of gear held less appeal to me than did sticking with what I have.
As to your experience with 28K albums, Altecs, and all that tube gear, as Story said, "Holy Crap!"
I admit that for a 20 year period, I definitely had an addiction for records and gear. Once everything got blown away, my addiction to audio was over. And it had lost much of its importance to me. I still had my system, but I didn't even hook it up for over a year. It's truly been a process to again enjoy relaxing and listening to music. But I've been back to enjoying the hobby for the last 6 years or so, but I don't fuss or obsess over it.
And not to brag, but both of those HUGE audio and vinyl finds cost me $300 each. People had stopped paying their storage fees and it was sold to recoup the back storage bill. Right place, right time and obsessive searching. It was a deal I couldn't refuse, but it sure pissed off my wife until I began making thousands selling it off. :)
...in the literal sense. In the end, it's all just stuff. I'm glad you were able to relax and enjoy music once again.
Thanks, it definitely was a slow process. I also have always been an avid fisherman. And that too no longer had any importance. But along with music, that has returned and actually took about the same amount of time. Life is good!
And you are correct, it was all just stuff. We still had the important stuff which was our lives and health.
You are correct, life IS good, even when it's not.
Agree. A large part of life being good is our attitude. Which is one of the few things we can truly control.
I know a few that have problems with that and need professional help
They definitely walk amoung us. :)
you're going to need another lifetime for all of that
It was great fun, but very time consuming. It took me 7 months and many hours going through the records to pick out what I wanted to keep. I then put out some feelers and began selling off the records that didn't interest me. I would say 75% were 12" promo singles of early 80's/90's rap and hip hop. I sold about 10,000 of them to 2 guys from Vegas that drove to my house in MO 3'seperate times. One was a top Party DJ and the other was a Manager for many top party DJ's across the country. They knew exactly what they were looking for. The DJ won a yearly contest in Vegas against DJ's from all over the world. All of this was around 2008. The remainder got blown away in the Joplin 2011 tornado along with my personal collection. I was able to save very little. I was able to save my stereo system which was a huge blessing, but I never got back into records, I was done.
Yikes, that is one HECK of a story!
