I really appreciate your comments (all 3) that come from experience, and the references also. I had no idea that the SP-4 was so bad. Transplanting other circuitry into the SP-4 chassis sounds like it might be difficult. You didn't actually do that did you? It is a good looking chassis, and heavy duty feeling. The PAT-4 also has a good look. I would have to have lots more encouragement before I went that way. The Marantz will require some study, as I said, and it may take some time but I agree that is the way to go.
Thanks,
John
Follow Ups:
i had the SP-4 from a customer. I had a difficult time getting the power supply working until i replaced all the caps (even when they tested fine).
I suggested to put in the hafler boards but he didn't want to spend any money getting it fixed. i replaced the caps (and rectifier diodes with ufxxxx) and listened to it for a few hours.
i liked the SP-4 look and feel (much better than the dh-101) and was kind of excited to work on it. Once I listened to it, I thought the hafler boards would be an upgrade.
i haven't heard from the owner since he picked it up.

It's an interesting idea transplanting boards. I just looked up the DH-101 manual. Looks like most of the important circuitry is contained on PC-4, or maybe there are 2 of those. And then use the existing controls from the SP-4. Did you actually have some boards made? Interesting project. Thanks for your comments.

i created line stage boards with the tone controls bypassed (per TAA), phono boards and a simple PS board.
I built a pre using the boards for a rear speakers in a "Home Theater". I've recently updated the boards with pretty green MUSE bipolars. The pre is currently on the shelf waiting for a raspberry pi streamer.
i really like my 101 (it might be the Ikea effect) and have been searching (and buying) many preamps and not really sure if any of them are better.

And behavioral science lesson.
To go to this much trouble, you must really like the 101. Definitely you will like it when you get done!
What is TAA?
Hats off to your DIY skills!
