Airtime, How's the VTA-70 doing? anything new? I will bring my VTA-120 back out into my system after I go through the sockets and clean them and retention the blades for better contact before firing it up.
Yeah, That was crazy about the Titanium screw. They wanted me to try it but was already cool with what I had in sound for my system. The Carbon Fiber Outlet cover did work but not like they said. And all the talk on AC connectors. I myself did get caught up in it a little but came to my senses. So just stayed away after that but do check in some times.
I remember the days when there would be some really good info on tweaks forum that people would share their experiences on what had worked circuits or other things. I remember a lot of IC tweaking and talk on how to bypass or how to make your IC run in Class mode. Nothing like that anymore. Just talk about the wire thickness or bigger physical size resistors or caps.
I posted about the Bose 901 and EQ project I'm doing over in the speaker forum as an update but I will bring here to the Vintage forum which I think would be a better place for it.
I also have some other projects that I will share here when I get going on them. Phase Linear PL-400, tape decks and others.
I'm staying away for some forums as the same group is coming out of IC and starting their crap in other forums now.
Follow Ups:
I was interested in that Bose EQ project. I saw all those CC resistors and my first thought was to switch them all out for MF resistors. But --- I started to think about the inherent sound and value of the original voicing. Hey, why not just refresh those CC resistors!!!!
My VTA is an interesting project. The amp is great. I mean it is a stellar performer. However????? it's not suited towards my taste. It has a surprisingly SS sound with a lean midrange. I tried a dozen tweaks to "fatten" up the mid, but with no luck. So I'm reverting the low gain 12AU7 board back to the high gain 12AT7 version. It's just a matter of a few resistor change outs. Ah, I'll see what happens?
I have three WONDERFUL amps that I use on a rotation basis. So the VTA is a project I like to think about and tinker with.
To the 12AT7s yet, give this tube a try the 6H8C in the middle position. I tried this tube after the Northern Electric 6SN7s I tried didn't work in the middle tube spot. Very nice midrange with good upper end and very good bottom. I got mine at Upscale Audio, they were very reasonable in price. I liked them so much I bought 4 more.
As for the Bose 901 project, I was pulling the speakers out from the room I had them stored in. Hopefully I will have pics to post here very soon. If the EQ works properly, then I will go further with the upgrades and replace all the caps with Takman Carbon Film. These should work well. Also I have some Wima film caps coming to upgrade the film caps. I'm also going to try a Nichicon Film cap that is for Audio. Don't know if these are new but I never heard of them before so I will give them a try in place of the 5uf coupling caps.
