I'm a little surprised that after 12 years without service it runs at all. My old Teac X1000R would never have made it that long.
The problem sounds like lubrication that has turned to sludge. Good luck. You might get more intelligent assistance by posting on the Tape Trail forum.

thanks, I'll copy over to that forum. When you say lube, I know there are several mechanical sections that require lube, pulleys, and tape head engagement, nothing is really hanging there or screaming out, but what area would need addressing in this situation, I don't think the DC motors are embedded in grease are they?
It was used maybe once in a blue moon in the 12 year span, and in very good climate control maybe, that's why it still functioned at least 80% of the way -lol

If you Google Teac X10 you'll find a wealth of information. The second YouTube by Dan Nastase includes directions on replacing the main drive belt.
