My PV5 preamp gave up its magic smoke earlier today....a PS capacitor failed.
Who can repair/restore this preamp ? I have a quote from Musical Technology, but their cost is more than I want to spend. I sent a message to CJ service, who I understand will repair all CJ equipment regardless of vintage.
Does anyone offer a restoration kit ?
Thank you.

When my PV5 failed due to a power supply problem, I sent it to conrad-johnson. They replaced the capacitors in the power supply as well as the voltage regulator transistor and other parts. I knew it was done properly and with the correct parts because they originally engineered the unit. It seems like a false economy to send it to some random technician.
I second this- send it to c-j.

+2 for sending to CJ, but will add if yours still has the electrolytic caps in the power supply, replace with new electrolytics not film caps. I have owned 3 PV-5s over the years. The most recent has the film caps in teh power supply which many claim is an upgrade, but still prefer the version that has lytic caps in the power supply. The PV5 and and the MV75 are two of the CJ units that have that magical CJ sound. If you change too many of the internal parts, you will lose that sonic character.
I have a PV-10 preamp and a MV-55 amplifier. The JJ technicians have worked on both and the sound is fabulous. So, I second sending to CJ for repairs/upgrades.

I can't see CJ being the less expensive option vs. an independent. But you will get the unit back as it should be. Not that MT wouldn't do a complete refresh but some places might just change the failed parts and call it good.
It would be hard to put together a kit for that kind of failure.
Good technicians are always expensive; the reverse is not necessarily so. If you don't know how to suss out a power-supply problem, hire a pro who does.
I've had good results from: Ben Jacoby (highendaudiorepair.com) whose queue tends to be measured in months (and well worth the wait), Audio Classics (audioclassics.com), and Blackie Pagano (blackiepagano.com.)
If c-j will do it, I'd give it to them. They'll know if there were any revisions to the PV5 during its production run, and particularly if you ask, I'm sure they will install them.
Good luck.

If a PS cap failed, they usually don't just go. They usually take a resistor or two with them.
AudioClassics.com may do repairs. It's worth a try.
