I can not seem to solder a banana jack correctly, I end up with solder
at the top 20% of the jack rather than completely into the jack, down the wire...suggestions please.
Does the jack need to be vented, maybe air locked preventing flow?
thanks....
Follow Ups:
Does it have a coating? Gold etc..
Maybe file off the coating and get to the copper.
Picture would help.
I too have found that filing off the outer coating down to the copper is very effective for many speaker binding posts.
Fully tin the speaker wire first.
Get an iron with enough wattage to heat the jack quickly.
add a small amount of solder when you do the final assembly.
Compared to the actual contact the banana plug is making on the binding post, even 20% solder coverage of the wire to the banana will be a far better contact than the banana to the post. Spade lugs give a lower loss connection.
Maybe if you posted a picture of the jack we could see what you are up against .
