Does the finish on an amp or preamp chassis influence the sound? For example painted vs. brushed aluminum? Seems like it could?
If painted, does the paint color also affect the sound?
I am rebuilding some preamps and building some amp kits and I need to decide how to finish the chassis exteriors...

Maybe. Some equipment maybe relying on an uninterupted farraday cage shield for best performance, and aplied finishes that act as an insulator could potentially compromise that part of the design.
I plan on building an orgone box type chassis. Should do wonders for the sound!

aka Click & Clack from 'Car Talk' always used to ask the color of the callers car to help them debug any mechanical issues. Of course, it was just a running joke as it didn't matter. I expect the same for amplifier chassis though given the choice I vote for a nice rainbow pattern to be progressive.
If you were a real audiophile you'd have them CNCed from solid.
That was a fun show.
I spent my early adulthood (being generous to myself here) in Boston, listening to live music at least once a week (usually more often), going to Fenway, eating fish at the piers (noname retaurant had the freshest fish, literally right off the boats), and having fun with the Coeds.
The good old days...
What was the name of the hifi show that NPR also ran out of Boston?

But using a solid, well damped chassis reduces microphonics and improves shielding RF/EM. Copper and brass are better than aluminum in my book, but that is probably as much of an aesthetic choice as a sonic one. Surface treatments that dampen the chassis are good.
VTA amp kits use Stainless Steel. And of a heavier gauge than the old Dynaco amps....
Maybe add wooden Side Rails to a steel or aluminum piece.......??? Certainly if vibration is an issue, a little damping couldn't hurt?
Too much is never enough
