So it's ok to recommend a fuse 2.5 times the current rating that the equipment designer put in the product he designed?

tweaker456,
I understand your concerns, and can not personally recommend such an increase in the current ratting of the fuse.
However, I also understand the logic behind Duster's reply, and what he points out is not unreasonable. Looking into this a bit further myself, I note that KanedaK lives in Europe, and most likely in dealing with a 240 VAC service, thus, 200mA is not as small as it looks.
It is also true that in order for the use of the 500 mA fuse to be dangerous, it must allow enough current to damage or cause a component inside the preamp to fail catastrophically to the point of ignition. Thus, if the transformer primary can handle the 500 mA without torching things, it would then theoretically not be an issue.
A hard short inside the preamp should cause the 500 mA fuse to blow very quickly, so this scenario is not likely to be as much of a problem as it might seem.
All of that said, I still in all conscience can not recommend the use of such a larger value. For these low current levels, maybe 50% above the original rating might be OK, but even that should be looked at on a case by case basis, and reasoned through in terms of what the most likely failure scenario would be, etc. and whether or not such a larger fuse value would allow enough current to become a fire failure hazard, etc.
Thus, if it is difficult to find a 200 mA rated fuse, then maybe a 250 mA fuse would be OK, but I personally wouldn't go up to 500 mA.

Thanks for the response JR. I was beginning to thing someone really did shoot you.

I learned the ropes about cabling and a number of specialized tweaks from JR, especially during the early times when he often posted in AA.
Cheers, Duster

Why are you trying to bother JR or any other AA moderator? Discussions about such matters occur between fellow AA Inmates, all the time.
The role of a moderator is not to stand as the final answer within any given thread, it's simply to make sure the spirit and decorum of a forum is maintained.
In the case of JR, he is well-respected for his productivity and knowledge over the years. He may or may not agree with the notion in question.
Just keep in mind, another knowledgeable audio technician gave it a pass. Enough said.
