Hi Dave. We have LOTS of customers using The Black Hole (and previous grungebuster mats) with top-loaders/magnetic pucks. Plenty of feedback indicates it's generally quite effective.
The Black Hole material is very thin and magnetically transparent, so it doesn't much affect the puck's magnetic function. The Black Hole smooths out microphonic vibration in the CD's spin, thereby reducing the vibrations that cause distortions elsewhere in the player. (These vibrations permeate through the clamping mechanism/transport to microprocessors, capacitors, op-amps, etc. where most of the distortion damage occurs. Reducing or smoothing out these vibrations is the primary cause of The Black Hole's effectiveness.)

In your opinion, does it pay to be very precise when centering?
Yes, Wellfed. Some CD players have variations of a top clamping "wedge" that spreads out from the hole at a relatively shallow angle. The mat has to be a little oversize to stay clear of this mechanism. It's my experience that as long as it is approximately centered or looks fairly even, the mat works superbly, and if it's much off-center the quality diminishes only barely if at all (so long as it's centered well enough that the CD center hole remains clear). This might vary from one player to another, though.
After a little practice, you'll find The Black Hole is easy to "eyeball" a pretty good centering (the mat gets easier to apply, too, as the pressure-sensitive adhesive becomes less aggressive).
I would suggest that it pays to center the mat as well as is practical without undue effort. You'll probably develop your own technique whereby applying the mat gets really easy, a snap, taking only a second or two.

Thanks for the quick response, Herbie.
