Hello folks, its been a while since I was last a patient here. Doc says I need to visit.
Anways, I was pondering my living enviroment, looking at sources of noise and apart from PC fans, and the fridge. Two other domestic apliances really annoy and are intrusive. Our washing machine and tumble dryer. Both sit on a concrete floor and up against a brick wall. The washing machine sits into the worktop and cupboards one side of which is a cavity. The tumble drier is not surrounded the same, it just takes up its space on the floor. Either machine can be on for several hours, especialy as we have 3 kids one whose 2 and clothes are for ever washed. I have yet to build an outhouse for them, great idea to chuck em in the garden, eh?
So how would you silence these noisy appliances.
Forgive my spelling.

Are you willing to spend the money? That's the real problem.
Here is one of many site offering sound ideas.

Find a janitorial supplier and get a mat to sit them machine on. alternatively use a scrap of carpet upside down which will let you slide the machine when you have to.
Expanded polystyrene sheet can be placed around the side of these machines.
Not perfect but not expensive.

Their appliances are supremely made and startlingly quiet.
Until you get the repair bills. At least that was my sisters experience with Miele.

Million miles from home.
We've been thinking of looking at one of those (Miele or LG). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a dealer who carries or has even heard about them in Canada.
They're common in Europe. One of the advantages (I've read) is that they're 'idler wheel' kind of driven rather than the usual belt-drive. Supposed to make them pretty quiet.
Would spiking them on the floor help? My brother-in-law spiked their bed when the neighbours were complaining about.......mmmm.....you know....
I have one from Thor Appliances. Ordered ot online. It's nice and very green. It uses 17 gallons of water compared to 40-60 on most units. Uses less AC power as well. It has a sealed dryer with no hot air dryer vent. Your clothes will be steamy and need to be put away right when the dryer cycle finishes or you'll have very wrinkled clothes that are a pain to iron back to unwrinkled. Still worth it as I see it. Nice also having no washer to dryer switch. Oh and it's quiter too.

Go back to a washboard and clothes pins? On second thought, that might result in another noisy appliance. Never mind, bad idea.
Hi.
What makes me nut also is the lowly rumbling noise of my frige compressor, which kicks in whenever it wants.
But what can we do?

Okay, not much so far. I'll guess I'll move into an outhouse:) No seriously, just bought a new washing machine 2 year ago.The only time it runs quiet is when it washes a small load, rarely does that happen. A full load and it vibrates through the house, and probably, the neighbour hears it too. I was thinking along the lines of acoustic damping on the wall behind. As for the tumbledryer, the insides are quite hollow and being thin metal casing, would some sort of damping pad, stuck inside, work?

Hi.
In the White North country here, we got up to +40C summers & -40C winters.
So central heating & cooling is a matter of course in every house up here.
Here you go, the heating/cooling kicks automatically whenever it is programmed, rocking the whole house with thunderous noises.
So for serious listening, I got to put the heating/cooling auto-programmes on hold. But then, when my wife finds out what I have done to upset the room temperatures, you know very well what will follow?
