Paul,
I wouldn't bypass the caps with anything, even with the incomparable TFTF V-caps. I have tried bypassing V-cap OIMP with V-cap TFTF and it doesn't sound right, especially in coupling positions. If you don't have a place for the V-cap TFTF caps, you can sell them here or on Audiogon for a minimal loss. I have several sizes of V-cap OIMP and TFTF that I'm going to be selling soon. I found that putting a single V-cap TFTF in the outputs of my preamp is the best way to go. I don't have any experience with the Munsdorf, but I've talked to several people who have and the V-cap TFTF is superior in their opinion to the Munsdorf in electronic coupling applications.
Follow Ups:
Hi Sherod
Am I correct in thinking you lost some focus when you bypassed?
My first choice would be TFTF V-Caps, but to get the correct size (3.3uF) would set me back more than a grand which is waay past my budget. The Mundorf Silver/Oils would only cost $100 or so.
Shoot me a mail regarding the V-Caps you want to move.
Thanks
Paul
Paul,
When I bypassed the OIMP with different values of TFTF, it wasn't so much a loss of focus as it was a type of phase problem. There was always a tilting up of the frequency spectrum. It is difficult to explain, but after some long term listening, I realized that listener's fatigue was setting in. Whenever I removed the bypass, the sound came back to normal. Now, this was in the output of my preamp only. I didn't try a bypass in other coupling locations, so that might be a different story. Doing a quick inventory, I have V-cap OIMP values 2.7uf, 3.3uf, and 4.0uf. In V-cap TFTF, I have .01uf, .1uf, and .22uf. I'll e-mail you later with the details.
... what I hear when bypassing the preamp output coupling caps:
