Has anyone attempted to bypass the Sony SCD-1 or 777ES S-TACT? If so, have you noticed that it is noisy?
Have you noticed a low level noise during quiet moments of a recording? I have installed a VSE5+ upgrade and I hear this noise which sounds like digital hash and a bit like birds chirping. It is quite intrusive with low level recordings or recordings with a lot of quiet like classical. Possibly some IM artifact? Whatever the S-TACT does, it appears to be removing this noise, since I do not hear it out of the stock outputs.
If you have heard this when bypassing the S-TACT, did you find a solution and what was it?
I have found that one channel is slightly noiser than the other which is helping me to pinpoint. I reversed the inputs to the VSE and the noisier channel followed the reversed input, so it is clearly not the VSE causing the problem.
I have connected the outputs of the player directly to headphones and I still hear it, so I don't suspect IM distortion in the downstream components.
I had read somewhere that the VC-24 can get a little noisy when overloaded. Perhaps this is the issue since it is feeding into both my VSE as well as the S-TACT. I may remove the 4 331ohm pads to remove the S-TACT load and see if this solves the problem. Can I do this without impacting the operation of the player, other than disabling the stock outputs for DSD of course?
I would like to know if anyone else has heard this noise and if so, did you find a solution?
Thanks.

This is in the wrong forum, however... It is quite possible that one or more of the resistors out of the VC 24 is open circuit or there are issues with your soldering ie a dry joint. In fact the VC 24 needs to see a load at rf frequencies so do not remove the R's... It is also possible that you need to increase the R values form the 331R standards, I suggest you try 1k or 1k2 resistors out of the VC 24
Ask Allen Wright directly if you have more problems.
Rob.
Thanks Rob.
Not sure why this is in the wrong forum. This is "tweaking" isn't it?
I checked with an ohmeter between the VC24 and S-TACT pins and see 331ohms on all 4 resistors so I ruled out an open circuit. Also, my stock outputs work fine and are noise free.
A dry joint is possible, since it was quite a challenge to solder wire directly to these tiny surface mount resistors. I will attempt to resolder this weekend to see if this was the issue.
If I remove these 331R's to the S-TACT, the VC24 would still see the load of the VSE.
I have exhausted all (except one) of Allen's suggestions, hence my post. His final suggestion is to pick up the signal after the S-TACT, but based on all the rave reviews of the VSE5+ that I have read, this will be my absolute last resort.
Thanks,
Chris
Hi,
I thought you would have more luck on the hi-rez forum. In my machine, admittedly with a VC 24+ the output goes to 4 1k2 resistors prior to going to the VSE module. Definitely don't remove the resistors unless replacing them with something higher in value, the VSE module will provide a load but I doubt it will be sufficient at rf on its own without the resistors.
Regards,
Rob.
