Hi there,
This may be a very novice question so sorry for taking up space if this is dreadfully obvious. I have a passive Transformer volume control for a preamp that sounds great and I am very happy with, BUT my CD player is just a little too loud on the lowest volume setting on some recordings (Turntable is fine). I am running 104db sensitive speakers with 300B SET monoblocks.
The CD player is a Marantz SA8260 which has 2.2V of output. Is there a way to diminish its output without degrading the sound quality at all? I would really appreciate any recommendations. I am handy with a soldering iron. Thanks a lot.
Follow Ups:
Place a 1K resistor between positive to ground. This will lower the output without degrading the sound. If 1K is too much or not enough-go more or less to suit.Works quite well.

on the output. Worth a shot, and easily removed if it causes a sonic degradation. After ascertaining the correct resistor for the level you're after, you could crack open the cdp to install the resistor directly to the output jack, to eliminate the Y-adapter and any degradation it may be causing.
Russ Andrews has a few attenuators using WBT 0108 RCAs for sale here .

build your self a pair of attenuators .....
there quite simple there are several recipes on the net ...then you can see if you can hear the difference....I suspect you will but its going to be worth it if the passive works better.
This is a common problem. Your passive transformer volume control does not have enough attenuation for the gain of your power amps. Adding resistors in series with the CDP output would have audible effects on a revealing system and would likely reduce the dynamic performance. Using an additional step-down transformer, even a very good one, would also degrade the sound.
It might be possible to reduce the voltage gain of your power amps. Contact the designer to see if perhaps a simple resistor change would accomplish what you want.
