Lately i've been damping here and there with Black Hole Pad. The last few weeks a 2" circle of the stuff has been adhered to the back of the compression driver on my hawthorne SI's. I knew 2" was a bit too much, but wanted to get used to what 'that' sounded like. Last night i had time so cut a 1.25" circle and removed the old ones. 1.25" is the ticket!
Anyways, i needed a use for the old 2" BHP circles, so i stuck them to the Child safety plugs that i keep in the unused outlets on my power strip and wall outlet. Major blackness and tighter bass was the reward.
i have to thank Kenster for the idea, i think he mentioned adding the Golden Sound Acoustics Discs to these little caps and hearing an improvement..so i tried a DIY version of this that costs next to nothing.
Any which way, a circle of BHP on those safety caps did very cool things...
Follow Ups:
Did you use "Black Hole 5" material? And what exactly did you do? Did you cover then entire back of the child safety plug or?
I have 80 of those child safety plugs inserted to the outlets in my home. The 80 pieces cover about 3/5ths of the non-used outlets in my home. The child safety plugs themselves do nothing sonically in my system. I have some Black Hole 5 left over from a previous speaker project.
Thanks, Chris
the Black Hole 5 material is for inside of speakers...it absorbs sound similar to acoustic foam right? that's NOT what i used.
This Black Hole Pad is available from Speaker City in california...$7 per sheet.
A long time ago i puchased a bunch of the child safety caps and put them throughout my place...no change that i could tell. Only recently, last 2 months, did i put them in the unused outlets in my stereo's power strip. Here, i could tell a good change.
All i did was make circles of this adhesive vinyl damping material that are the same diameter as the child safety caps and stuck them to the flat top. So, when these are plugged in all i see is a black disc, not a white disc. One side of the BHP is adhesive...
It might be interesting to make a damping cover for the wall outlet too, similar to what Acme Audio sells for about $10...to go inbeteen the cover plate and the wall.
...............:-)
Cheers
