i have the hawks with 4 claws (machined aluminum with a bearing) each. they are on a cement slab with carpet. i've tried a pair of zoethecus pods under them, but was unhappy with the results. i'm currently using cement pavers (which my wife is unhappy with) and i'm "okay" with, but they're a bit unstable (especially when the kids are around)and i think i can do better sonically. i've been thinking about cutting some maple, myrtle, ebony or bloodwood etc. in either four 3"x3"x1" squares (or perhaps i should go with the golden ratio)or a bigger single chunk. then i started thinking about bamboo... i spent some time going through the archives, but i'd like to hear some more current thoughts on this subject. i know this will still be a trial and error situation, but if two heads are better than one...
Follow Ups:
isn't the whole idea of spike to couple to the floor not float on top of th carpet? I use .99 cent each hardened target arrow points under my speaker and they are solidly touching the MDF tops of my stand which are then actually screwed down with 6)3" screws right through the carpet. Making the bottom of the stand a direct attachment of the floor.
I would never consider putting something under the spikes unless it was basically part of the floor.
... that's one idea.
The opposing camp (pretty much where I sit) says that by coupling to the floor you transmit a lot of mainly low frequency information which especially with a suspended floor, produces a lot of muddying of the sound.
Apart from a feedback loop to the other components, the space under the floor resonates and amplifies the bass frequencies and makes the bass slow and stodgey.
I was completely won over when I actually tried it.

...after reading that, i have very little idea what you're talking about. beautiful home though!here's what i've done so far:

An off the wall suggestion ....remove the spikes etc and get some auralex platfoam and sit the speakers on this ....
I use the mopads by the same people....a great improvement in musicality over the spikes and slab used before.
the down side is stability.....thought my speakers have a low center of gravity.
You could bolt a slab of concrete or granite to the bass of the speakers this will do wonders for the center of gravity and also make the speakers far stiffer ...just use the threaded holes for the spikes.
i don't think i'll be attaching anything to the speakers, but i checked out the mopads... interesting and cheap enough to to try for sure. if i don't use them in my main system, they'll be great in my workshop. thanks for the tip.
I have heard nothing but praise when a Walker Audio tuning kit is used under speakers.
Of course, this would involve cutting slits in the carpet/padding, inserting the resonance control discs under the carpet/padding and then installing the Valid points under the speakers.
The slits would be invisible once all is said and done and I wouldn't advise doing the installation with your SO home at the same time!!!!
Of course, one could forgo the discs and use them atop the speakers and other components which they work quite when implemented.
Cheers,

it's not that i have any problem with the carpet cutting or the s.o., but i think i'd like to keep using the claws for now. i like these speakers and i think they're designed well. i'm just trying to eek as much as i can out of them. i tried some 3.5"x3.5"x1" blood wood sqares tonight and it worked much better than i thought it would. the hawks perch on them easily and completely level. sonically; the hf really opened up, the over-all dynamics improved and the imaging is sharper. and they look nice too. i'll keep experimenting...
