  and its just an impedance mismatch ?
  
  my bugle phono pre and any other cdp i try is just fine.
  
  its just these 2 900series philips cdp that distort if i use the analog outputs.
  
  what can i use as source signal to measure max output voltage at the analog outputs ?
  
  maybe just play loud disc and let meter hold peak value ?

    I doubt if there's an impedance problem but, without knowing the output impedance of the players and how input impedance of your passive pre varies with volume setting, I cannot be sure. Is the problem at all volume levels? If so, it is probably something inherent in the players.

      both philips cdp can easily drive the amps to clipping while any other player does not.
      
      and yes there is distortion at all volume levels.
      
      my little portable philips cdp has a line-out port that doesnt cause distortion though.

        If it is distorting at all volume levels and the analog outputs of the players is not variable, then no attenuator will fix it. They are simply giving you distorted/clipped output. Have you tried them with another system?
