Almost by accident I tried some K42's , the ugly green ones..In a 27 tube pre in .22uf 160v. To my surprise after month later & I have bought many more of these. I see they are dissed in the archives, but my ears tell me much differant...I do wonder if it is the wax...actually oil impregnated wax.?, . the sonics I would say are extremelly good. the 27 is a extremmely low part count cap couple thing that runs into a 300B PP amp & nice OB speakers. Not a bright bitey cap with edge, but excellent naturalness to em, well that is how I here it. Vitamin Q is what I lived by till I tried these. Yes I have tried K40
Follow Ups:
Running a combo of K42 and K40 in a custom Dynaco ST-35. The interstage cap is a .22 Mfd 600 volt cap and the coupling caps are .1 Mfd 500 volt K42's. Sounds a lot smoother with better extension at the top and bottom end than the stock boards.

very cool..I like that amp alot & imagine it sounds wonderfull. I also see your running my all time favorite new production or should I say not long agao new production Ei.....I 1st noticed something differant w/ the k42's on music w/ Gibson LP's playing & I know the tones of them well as I play them & I finally got close to what my ears percieve as real LP tone on most any good recording with those paticualr tones in them. Vocals & everything else also has a uncanny natuarlness to them.No mud, No smearing, No fog, No blanket. Nice top & nice bottom. I put Auricaps in & pulled them fast & like auricap in alot of applications. But that is becomeing history with me because of my use of Vitamin Q/K40/K42. & the k42 really surprising me because of all the slam they get here on AA. But I am really not one to take much to seriouse till I hear it for myself..again that is one nice amp you got there..
I've been considering building a 27 pre. Would you happen to have a schematic of yours. Any tips would be appreciated.
Sure, Here is the basic schematic. I use a outbourd PS for now so I can tweek it , I use CLCLC instead of LCLC, alot quieter. Simple build you would enjoy I think, Also the glow reg tube are cool as heck.. I also use .22uf instead of .1uf & you could try anything from .1 to .5 . Also I use a pair of 6w4gt damper diodes for rectification, & I can show a schematic of the hookup for that if intrested. I prefer 27 globes to any st, but the globes are more sensitive to microphics & stray fields of any kind, TV's , SAT etc....also I use all wood chassis, this helps w/ microphonics, 3/4 all oak chassis & top. I have all kinds of pictures & such of mine, so if you build it I can send them to you.

Yes, I use both K40 and K42 in my ARC SP6 preamp. It makes it very natural sounding, bettering my ex-SP8 (that had been upgraded too).
